Appendicitis is an infectious disease in which bacteria infects the wall of appendix, a small organ of the colon. Appendicitis often develops abruptly causing rupture and complications. It causes severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever Antibiotics are given for treating appendicitis and in serious cases it has to be removed surgically. Appendix is a small finger like projection from the colon and is present in the right lower side of the stomach. Appendicitis occurs when appendix gets inflamed due to infection.
Appendicitis starts with sudden onset of abdominal pain felt on the lower right side. The pain begins in the navel area and shifts towards the lower right end of the stomach. As time passes, the pain worsens and it increases when you walk or cough. It can cause nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea or constipation and bloating sensation in the abdomen.
Appendicitis is believed to occur due to infection developing in the appendix. The soft lining of the appendix gets infected by bacteria causing inflammation (swelling) and the region is filled with pus. It can cause sudden rupture, resulting in the leakage of pus into the abdomen, causing serious complications. Ruptured appendix can spread infection on the peritoneum causing peritonitis. It is a life threatening condition requiring immediate surgery. In some cases, the inflamed appendix would burst inside pouring the infected pus into the abdomen.
Your doctor will collect complete medical history after doing physical exam. He would use his fingers to examine the lower part of the rectum to check if there is any inflammation. He would apply light pressure on the infected appendix and you can feel the pain worsening. Blood test, urine test and ultrasound scanning is done to get a clear picture of the infection.
Very often, appendicitis is operated surgically and removed. But if the infection is severe, antibiotics are given to heal the infection first. Appendectomy is the procedure of removal of infected appendix. A small incision is made on the abdomen and using laparoscopic procedure the surgeon would insert tools with camera for removing the appendix.
In serious cases, an open surgery is to be done making long incision. It is the easy procedure for draining the abscess and cleaning the abdomen. You will have to spend few days in the hospital after appendectomy. In some cases a tube is placed inside the abdomen through the skin to drain the abscess inside.
