Canker sores are small lesions or blisters that occur in your mouth and are called as aphthous ulcers in medical terms. Canker sores develop inside the mouth and not on lips like cold sores and are not contagious. It can cause discomfort and pain and difficulty in eating and talking. Canker sores can be treated with mouth rinse and topical paste and it gets cured completely within a week.

Women can get sores during monthly periods and pregnancy. Stress is another factor that triggers canker sores. Certain medical conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, Celiac disease, Behcet’s disease and autoimmune disorders can cause canker sores.
No special tests are needed to diagnose canker sores. Your dentist can easily identify canker sores on physical exam of your mouth.
Canker sores often resolve within a week or two. You can take painkillers if you feel discomfort in eating or drinking. Mouth rinses that contain dexamethasone are often prescribed for canker sores. It is effective in healing and reducing inflammation. Tetracycline can also be used for gargle the mouth.
Topical pastes that contain benzocaine or fluocinonide can give you relief from inflammation and pain. You need to apply the paste on the mouth where sores have developed. You can apply it repeatedly for 3-4 times a day until it heals completely.
For removing large sized canker sores, dentist may use cauterizing method. The sores are touched with the tip of special instrument dipped in chemical paste. It would burn off the sores quickly and the area heals rapidly. In case you have got canker sores due to vitamin deficiency you can take nutritional supplements in your daily diet.

- Milk of magnesia is also effective in healing canker sores.
- Over the counter topical pastes like benzocaine can be used for healing canker sores.
- Avoid eating hot and spicy foods when you have canker sores. Use soft toothbrush and give gentle strokes while brushing your teeth.
- You cannot totally prevent getting canker sores, but you can follow good oral hygiene.
- Avoid eating high acidic foods and identify the foods that trigger allergy.
- Change your toothbrush regularly and do not change your toothpaste often.
